The Two Bar Ridge Trailhead and the Cottonwood Canyon-south Trailheads in the Superstition Wilderness require 4WD. The trip on FR-83 involves a drive through a sandy wash, rutted washouts on fairly steep sections, and brush growing into the road that will add "Arizona Pinstriping" to your vehicle. The road is seldom used so if your vehicle breaks down, you'll have to walk back to SR-188 or the ranch.

FR-83 leaves SR-188 (south of Lake Roosevelt) between the turnoff for the Grapevine campground and the turnoff for the Tonto Cliff Dwellings. The trip on FR-83 is 6 miles and takes about 30 minutes. The elevation gain is 2100 feet.

The yellow spur pointed north (photo 1) is the road to the southern trailhead for the Cottonwood trail #120. The Arizona Trail uses FR-83 for the short distance between the Two Bar Ridge and Cottonwood Canyon trailheads.
