Upper Horrel Trailhead (Campaign Trailhead) in the Superstition Wilderness From SR-188 (south of Lake Roosevelt) near milepost 235, turn south onto FR-449 (aka J-B Ranch Road). You'll come to a "Y", bear to the left although FR-449 makes a right turn to the Tule Canyon Trailhead (see photos 2 and 3). You'll soon come to the Cross P Ranch. FR-449A makes a left turn just before the white fencing around the ranch house (see photos 4-7). The trailhead is 7.1 miles south of SR-188. NOTE: Many old maps show the road between Globe and the dam at Lake Roosevelt as SR-88--it is SR-188 on modern maps. The rancher put up the 4x4 only sign. They got tired of pulling 2WD vehicles out of the soft sand in the wash. Conditions change from one rain to the next and depend on how much traffic has used the road and packed down (or dug up) the sand since the last rain. Deep sand turns into loose powder when it's hot and dry. The Campaign Trail leaves the Upper Horrel Place trailhead and connects to the: Reavis Gap Trail (Reevis Trail), Fireline Trail, and Pinto Peak Trail. (The leg of the Pinto Peak Trail that heads east through Mormon Corral Spring has been abandoned.) FR-449A to the Upper Horrel Trailhead (aka: Campaign Trailhead, Upper Horrel Place) is 4WD only. The issue isn't rocks or ruts rather it's deep soft sand where the road runs down a sandy wash. The trailhead is next to the Reevis Mountain School and Sanctuary. (Note the difference in the spelling of the name--it's more commonly: "Reavis".) |
