The loop hike on Peter's Trail and Hoolie Bacon Trail in the Superstiton Wilderness requires using several other trails since these two don't share a common junction. Here's a full routing:
- Peters Trail west from the Tortilla Ranch Trailhead at the southern end of FR-213 to the Dutchman Trail near Charlebois Spring
- Dutchman's Trail north to Charlebois Spring to replenish water
- Dutchmans Trail south to the Red Tanks trail
- Short side trip to LaBarge spring. I didn't need water but I wanted to see the spring
- Red Tanks trail southeast to the Whiskey Spring Trail
- Camped on the Whiskey Spring Trail halfway between the Red Tanks trail and Whiskey Springs
- An early morning trip to Whiskey Springs to obtain sufficient water for the balance of the trip
- North on the Whiskey Springs Trail back to the Red Tanks trail
- Northeast on the Red Tanks Trail to the Hoolie Bacon Trail
- North on the Hoolie Bacon Trail to the JF-Trail
- North on the JF-Trail back to Tortilla Ranch
- A short hike at Tortilla Ranch between the JF-Trail and Peters Trail
The loop including side trips was 19.8 miles. Add 6 miles if you have to start from the Tortilla Trailhead along the Apache trail. That's the northern end of FR-213 which is 4WD-only. See Tortilla Ranch Trailhead. The starting/ending elevation is 3124 feet. The low is 2450 feet with a high of 3938 feet.
The path wasn't vey hard to follow with the exception of the loop around Peter's Mesa. The area has scattered low vegetation and lots of potential routes across the relatively flat area. Several times I'd find a couple of small cairns and then lose the path again. Your exact route isn't critical until you approach the creek bed west of Peters Mesa Peak 3753. Fortunately the path is much better defined in this area.
