The hike to Reavis Falls in the Superstition Wilderness is an unofficial off-trail hike. The hike takes 8 to 10 hours with the difference depending on the amount of water and leaves in the segment along Reavis Creek. Flowing water plus leaves over creekbed rocks really slow you down. Trecking poles came in handy due to the uncertain footing. On this hike, it took me two hours RT for the Reavis Falls section. The deepest water that I had to cross was knee-deep. Picking a date for this hike is difficult since the falls are only spectacular after a heavy rain. However, sufficient rain to make the falls interesting often closes the unbridged crossings on the Apache Trail (SR-88) at Tortilla Flat. The Arizona Department of Transportation has info. I assume that site is updated at least once a day for the Apache trail but that may not always be sufficient given that doing it as a day-hike requires a very early start (roughly two hour drive each way plus an 8-10 hour hike). The trailhead is roughly a two hour drive from the intersection of US-60 and Loop 101 in Tempe. (It's a three hour drive from Tempe if you go via Globe and SR-188 to avoid Tortilla Flat.)
For this hike, I avoided the closed crossing at Tortilla Creek by taking the long way around. I took US-60 east to Globe, SR-188 northwest to the dam at Lake Roosevelt, then southwest on SR-88 (the Apache Trail) to the trailhead. This added one hour and 60 miles to the trip--but I got through.
