The hike to the Roger's Canyon Cliff Dwelling from Roger's Trough Trailhead is a relatively easy 8 mile round trip. The 1000 foot elevation change is evenly spread over 4 miles--other than two steep sections within a mile of the trailhead that will make most hikers stop to catch their breath. Getting to the trailhead is the hard part since the Rogers Trough Trailhead is 4WD high-clearance only. The drive takes close to 2 hours from the US-60 and Loop 101 interchange in Tempe. The driving time is highly variable depending on the road conditions, your vehicle, and your comfort driving narrow mountain roads--the last 15 miles are unpaved and can take anywhere from 45 minutes to double that.

The hike starts on the Reavis Ranch Trail #109 then switches to the Roger's Canyon Trail #110 . It takes 4-6 hours depending on how much weight you're carrying plus the time you spend at the Cliff Dwelling. This is a popular overnight backpack with nice camping spots in Angel Basin--but there isn't reliable water. If it has rained recently, there can be pools and running water in Roger's Canyon. This hike is popular with Boy Scout Troops so you may not find solitude on fall and spring weekends.

The Cliff Dwelling is the major reason for making the trip. The Forest Service sign at the site says:

Rogers Canyon Cliff Dwelling
This prehistoric cliff dwelling was constructed and occupied by Salado Indians approximately 600 years ago. This site is fragile and irreplaceable. Please do not climb or walk on the walls, roof, or cause any other form of disturbance or damage. This site is protected by federal law. Violators are subject to fines or imprisonment. Enjoy but do not destroy your cultural heritage .

If you have extra time on the drive back, there are a number of things to see along the way such as the Elephant Trunk Arch and Hewitt Station. Rock hounds may be interested in the Hewitt Canyon Marble Mine but most will find little of interest.
