Map and directions for the drive to the Tortilla Trailhead (Tortilla Ranch Trailhead)

The Tortilla Trailhead in the Superstition Wilderness is at the end of FR-213 which is 4WD-only due to rock ledges near the start. There's a parking lot along the Apache Trail (SR-88) for non-4WD vehicles. The walk along FR-213 adds 6 miles to any hikes in the area.

The paved portion of the Apache Trail (SR-88) ends about a mile before FR 213. The right-hand turn onto FR-213 is between mile markers 221 and 220.

The road to Tortilla Ranch is an interesting hike that's worth the 6 miles--the first time. After that, you'll want to make friends with someone who has a capable 4WD vehicle.

If you have a 4WD vehicle, I suggest walking the first tenth of a mile or so the first time to scout the ledges. Be careful driving the ledges in the early morning--you'll be headed into the sun and sun-visors are of no use when the front of your vehicle is pointed up at a 30° angle. There's a steep and long drop-off into a canyon on the west edge of the road.

The official trails leaving from the area are: JF-Trail #106, Peter's Trail #105, and the Hoolie Bacon Trail #111. In addition there are a number of unofficial routes accessing: Fish Creek, Tortilla Creek, and the Miller Mines.
