The hike from the Woodbury Trailhead to Rogers Canyon Cliff Dwelling is longer and harder than starting from the Roger's Trough Trailhead but the Woodbury Trailhead is reachable by more vehicles. (Most of the time 4WD is not required to get to Woodbury--moderate clearance passenger cars can often make the trip depending on how much rain there has been since the road was last graded.) The long-distance views are much better on the hike starting from the Woodbury Trailhead than on the one starting from the Rogers Trough Trailhead. Consider a car-shuttle hike starting at Woodbury and ending at Roger's Trough.

The hike starts on the JF Trail leaving the Woodbury Trailhead until you get to Tortilla Pass, the hike then uses the Roger's Canyon Trail to Angel Basin and the Cliff Dwelling. There is'nt reliable water anywhere along the JF Trail or the Roger's Canyon trail. However, shortly after a rain, there may be flowing water in all the creeks along the way. There are numerous good campsites in and around Angel Basin but it's a popular spot for Boy Scouts so there might not be much solitude.

The Cliff Dwelling is the major reason for making the trip. The Forest Service sign at the site says:

Rogers Canyon Cliff Dwelling
This prehistoric cliff dwelling was constructed and occupied by Salado Indians approximately 600 years ago. This site is fragile and irreplaceable. Please do not climb or walk on the walls, roof, or cause any other form of disturbance or damage. This site is protected by federal law. Violators are subject to fines or imprisonment. Enjoy but do not destroy your cultural heritage .
Tonto National Forest

The climb to the upper ruin is dangerous for all but the well-cordinated. Getting up without slipping is probably easier than getting back down. Emergency services are several hours away. You'll need to drive to near Florence Junction to get cell phone service from the tower there. (As of 2/1/2009, there isn't cell phone service at Superior.)
