A group of vultures spiraling upward to gain altitude are called a "kettle". They are known to fly as high as 3 or 4 thousand feet above the surrounding terrain. They can possibly fly higher but are hard to spot. (http://tmbc.info/tuvu/turkey_vulture_count_summary.html)
