Century Plant in the Superstitions
Photos of the life cycle of Century Plants in the Superstition Wilderness often referred to locally as the "Superstition Mountains" or the "Superstitions".

After years of growth (but not a century), the plant sends up a flower stalk as tall as 20 feet and then dies. The rigid fleshy leaves have a needle at the tip (photo 5) and are dangerous to hikers since the can penetrate boots or leg muscles to the bone.
